API Impact

Horn of Africa

The Institute has become a household name in the Horn and Great Lakes regions. Over the years, API has become a leading think tank providing unique, research-based and factual analysis and perspectives on the geopolitics of the region.

Our experts popularized the idea of ‘Cushitic Alliance,’ involving Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, and its impact on Horn security. The strident rise of a politicized Cushitic Consciousness brought the Kenya-Somali relations to an all-time low, pushed Ethiopia to its Second Civil War in Tigray, and weakened IGAD as the cornerstone of a regional security architecture.

China-Africa Relations

Through its China-Africa Center (CAC), the Africa Policy Institute has become Africa’s leading think tank on China-Africa studies, providing cutting edge research and analysis to guide policy-making and shape the dialogue of the two civilizations.

Five years ago, the Africa policy institute established its center of excellence on China-Africa relations which has become known for its high-profiled conferences, books and reports on dynamics in China-Africa relations. With over 200 media articles and interviews, the center is a sharp arrow-head in shaping policy and dialogue between the two civilizations.

API President was appointed as one of the members of the International Advisory Board of the China-Africa Institute (CAI), the premier think tank unveiled by Chinese President Xi Jinping and launched in Beijing on April 9, 2019 to enhance China-Africa civilizational exchanges. API experts are in the think Tank forum of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and other networks on China-Africa studies.

API Impact

Foreign Policy

In 2007, API experts provided technical support to the intense policy process leading to Kenya’s first-ever foreign policy document and strategy, officially published in 2014. API has since been in the forefront of shaping the country’s foreign policy discourse and capacity-building on diplomacy through training of diplomats, publications, media articles and advisory services.

Constitutions

Our experts were at the heart of the negotiations and policy processes that birthed the 2010 Constitution. Since then, the Institute has been firmly at the center of the implementation and reform of the supreme law.

Violent Extremism

API experts provided technical services and leadership in the policy process, research and drafting of two seminal regional policy documents by IGAD. The “IGAD Regional Strategy for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism” was launched in 2018.

Regional Refugee Response Strategy

Further, the “Nairobi Declaration on Durable Solutions for Somali Refugees and Reintegration of Returnees in Somalia” (and the accompanying Plan of Action) was finalized and agreed upon during the IGAD Summit in Nairobi in March 2017.
